The 20th century, which opens with a world war, renews the link between landscape and history. We had believed in a separation, in a triumph of the landscape that had become autonomous. It was a new alliance: the union of two forces helping each other to face the violence of the world. We are not too many of two in the face of what astonishes.
The era invented new forms, hybrid, surpassing and canceling any idea of hierarchy between genres, capable of confronting history by the addition of their qualities. It is to this field of forces that the present exhibition aspires to give a visible and intelligible shape, by proposing a journey in eleven stations that question, along a chrono-thematic current, the relationship between landscape and history. Opening with the gesture of Claude Monet who offers two Nymphéas to France, the day after the armistice of November 11, 1918, to celebrate the victory, this pilgrimage testifies to the constant resistance of the landscape as an agent of contemporary history. It will be about wars, the quest for origin, appropriation and nostalgia, interior landscapes and the play between nature and abstraction. It will be about the relationship between landscape and nation. It will be about the relationship to time as well as to space, how the landscape as an acting force comes to cover history, between mourning and forgetting. It will also be about how the landscape has imposed itself, like a witness, to speak of our era in its aspirations as well as its crises, its utopias as its anxieties. The landscape today is not just a matter of pictorial genre as it once was. In photography, sculpture, video and painting, artists try to give shape to our history: our history in the landscape.
Eleven chrono-thematic sections structure this exhibition: Nymphéas for history, Landscapes at war, Countries, landscape, Abstracting nature, At the origin, Interior landscapes, Past, present, future, Local, global, total, After history, the landscape, Anthropocene landscapes, Lost paradises? These are the steps of a crossing, the chapters of a history of our century, whose memory rests in the landscape.
