New York clarinetist, saxophonist and composer Hillai Govreen joins Rio de Janeiro–based seven‑string guitarist Artur for an intimate exploration of the musical links between jazz and choro.
Coming from a rich family musical tradition, Artur has an in‑depth knowledge of the traditional repertoire as well as the singular rhythmic language of the seven‑string guitar. Hillai, for her part, is influenced by many Brazilian composers and brings her experience of jazz improvisation and contemporary creative music.
Together, they blend lyrical melodies, improvisation and the rhythmic richness of Brazilian music to create a sound world both deeply rooted in tradition and open to spontaneous discovery. Drawing on Brazilian instrumental music, South American composers, the jazz repertoire and their own arrangements, the duo highlights the affinities and bridges between these different musical worlds.
Through the warm resonances of the seven‑string guitar and the expressive voice of the clarinet and saxophone, their performance celebrates dialogue, listening and the power of music to transcend languages, cultures and geographic borders.
