In a profusion of black velvet, the margins of the scene on the ground, La Ribot and Mathilde Monnier – in justaucorps and shoes, also black – engage a burlesque number where energy expenditure, repetition and accident create an irresistible comic tension – between a striptease of the knees and a verbal logorrhea. With its techniques of reversal, so and so, the classic burlesque is the art of transforming incompetence into competence. It is precisely this path that Gustavia follows, a false stage name of a woman trying to talk about great subjects that go beyond her and her artistic profession. Together with Gustavia, the two choreographers evoke both contemporary art and their way of working, through a play that the years have charged with a new meaning. When they created it in 2008 at the Montpellier Danse festival, La Ribot and Mathilde Monnier already know each other very well and take advantage of it to take stock of their respective lives and journeys, thus continuing a conversation started fifteen years earlier. Their choreographic practices have in common to borrow their vocabulary from other aesthetics, starting with theatre. They reactivate the play today in the wake of feminist movements (like #MeToo) that have emerged since. With this female plea, they offer an even more blacker, funnyer and percussive interpretation of two free women facing the world and violence with humour and poetry.
