This large-scale project invests all the spaces of the Louis Vuitton Foundation on a two-part course — Gustave Fayet collector and Gustave Fayet, creator — revealing the singularity of a journey where collection, creation and artistic commitment respond. The exhibition thus draws the portrait of an essential actor of modernity at the turn of the century and today unjustly forgotten.
The exhibition is an unprecedented event. On the one hand, for the first time in a century, it brings together more than 250 works from an extraordinary collection, now scattered around the world and, on the other hand, 325 works by Gustave Fayet, mostly never shown to the public and restored for the occasion.
The course highlights a set of 10 paintings by Vincent van Gogh, 78 works by Paul Gauguin, 88 works by Odilon Redon, but also paintings and pastels by Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Paul Signac, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard and Henri Matisse.
A result of a multi-year survey, the exhibition is supported by 64 international institutions and 71 private collections.
This unprecedented exhibition reveals a leading personality, gradually relegated to the oblivion: Gustave Fayet (1865-1925), a passionate collector, artist and also a fruitful creator, was a tireless and exceptional entrepreneur, visionary in the field of decorative arts. Behind this unknown name lies one of the greatest defenders and discoverers of the avant-garde of his time, a man who actively contributed to the emergence of modern art in all its forms. Gustave Fayet is indeed among the first to collect van Gogh, to exhibit Picasso or to create at his home, in the heart of Paris, a "Musée Gauguin", rich of nearly 200 works, where all the artists and great collectors of the period are rushed. A friend and a fervent lover of Redon, he offers him the opportunity to create a great decor, remained secret, in his Abbey of the Midi of France in Fontfroide.
Gustave Fayet is not only an exceptional collector who has gathered more than 740 major works of modern art (excluding prints). He was also in the second part of his life a creator whose success marked the decorative arts of the early 20th century. Painter, watercolourist, ceramist, decorator, creator of carpets, fabrics and wallpapers, illustrator of books, he embodies this generation for which art irrigates all aspects of life. His creations, broadcast in the largest galleries and important salons of his time, seduce such influential figures as Paul Poiret, Jacques Doucet or Jeanne Lanvin. From Art Nouveau to Art Deco, Fayet fully participates in the invention of a new art of living where fine arts and decorative arts merge. For Gustave Fayet, collecting and creating come together in the same spirit.
This first international event dedicated to this unique and pioneering figure in many ways, unveils an exciting universe and opens a new chapter in modern art and decorative arts from the early 20th century. This ambitious project brings together a total of 740 works and documents distributed between the two parts of the exhibition.
