Grape Harvest Festival

In September and October, the vineyards welcome harvesters who carefully pick the bunches by hand, taking care to keep every grape intact. This is very intense, challenging, and hard work that deserves respect and high praise.
You can experience the atmosphere of a traditional Cypriot grape harvest at the Grape Harvest Festival in Panagia—a mountain village in the Paphos region. The village is located at an altitude of about 900 meters above sea level, so the grape harvest season begins a little later here than in other villages: due to the high altitude and less sunlight, the grapes ripen only in October.
Guests are invited to take a walk through the vineyards accompanied by donkeys and live music performed by talented musicians. You’ll have the chance to pick grapes yourself and carefully place the bunches into baskets strapped to the donkeys.
Once the harvest is complete, participants are treated to a well-deserved feast—“boukkoma” (Mpoukkoma), small portions of a traditional Cypriot breakfast as a reward for your hard work.
The celebration then moves from the fields to the village square, where the grapes are sent to a traditional, antique wine press. You’ll have the chance to dip your feet in the grapes and watch as fresh grape juice flows into the barrels.
The square will also host demonstrations of how to prepare traditional grape-based foods:
- Palouzes — a delicate dessert made from grape juice and flour;
- Soutzioukkos — almonds or walnuts strung on a thread and dipped several times in palouzes;
- Zivania — a strong traditional Cypriot alcoholic beverage made from grape pomace.
Guests will be able to sample and purchase other grape-based products, as well as watch local artisans at work as they create items that evoke the traditions of the past.
Before leaving, be sure to try the local wine offered by Cypriot winemakers.
The festival program also includes:
- an exhibition of photographs and items of rural life;
- donkey rides;
- children’s entertainment and activities;
- traditional dances and music in the afternoon.
