Carmen Amaya could only haunt the imagination of Aina Alegre, a prolific choreographer today heading the Centre chorégraphique de Grenoble. But for Aina Alegre, nostalgia gives way to modernity, that of La Amaya, a gypsy whom Hollywood coveted, a strong woman in a man's world, a myth defying her own body. FUGACES lives up to its title, an opus playing with rhythm, summoning a miniature brass band on stage or unfolding a round dance, an open vest over the chest or a skirt panel on trousers to keep a certain flamenco folklore at a distance. More than once, the show draws us into a fiesta, the dancers diverting the foot stamps typical of flamenco, or the arched poses. Carmen Amaya is for Aina Alegre a “revenante”, a kind of benevolent ghost guardian of this wildly energetic creation. From Boléro de Ravel, here deconstructed, to the projected images of Carmen Amaya, everything here, then, makes sense. And sensation.
