What are today the stakes, but also the dead ends, of the representation of filmed justice in France under the Badinter law? To answer this question, Filmer la justice looks back at the ways trials have been filmed throughout history, from the media frenzy of the Lindbergh case in 1930s America to the trial of Klaus Barbie, passing through the political trials of the Soviet and Nazi regimes, the judgment of Pétain, the Nuremberg tribunal, and the Eichmann trial. The exploration of filmed archives brings out the meaning of these major trials and reveals different philosophies of justice, of our relationship to the visible, and of the filmmaker’s role. Because everything here is a matter of perspective.
