Transforming stone into gold
LooLooLook Gallery presents Transforming stone into gold, an exhibition that is part of its program dedicated to the dialogue between contemporary European and Asian practices. Through this new series, Zhao Biru continues a reflection on the transformations of matter, gesture and gaze, bringing ink, paper, stone and memory into dialogue. Her work explores the borders between the visible and the invisible, between fragility and strength, matter and light. Born in China in a family of artists, trained at the University of South Yangtze and then at the École supérieure d’Art et de Design d’Amiens, Zhao Biru has lived and worked in France for more than twenty years. Her path, nourished by Chinese calligraphy and contemporary painting, has shaped a singular plastic writing where power and softness balance. Ink remains at the heart of her language, but it now goes beyond the frame of painting to occupy space.
In Transforming stone into gold, recycled paper, fragile and meant to be thrown away, metamorphoses into mineral volumes of astonishing lightness. It becomes stone, relief and sculpture, while ink turns into matter and the calligraphic gesture becomes space. Suspended on the wall, these works invite us to reconsider our relationship to value, time and transformation. Zhao Biru does not seek to create an illusion, but to shift our perception and provoke wonder.
Her creative process is based on a dialogue between intuition, water, breath and movement. Without preparatory drawing, each work is born from a balance between mastery and chance, in the spirit of the circulation of Qi. Gold lines then cross the dark surfaces like breaths or flashes of light, revealing what seemed hidden.
With this exhibition, Zhao Biru crosses a new stage of her journey: she transforms matter to better reveal the invisible and invites the viewer to look differently at what surrounds them.
