Exhibition presentation
For an architect, for a painter‑artist, Paris and its trees are a source of inspiration: parks, gardens, squares, avenues, secret alleys, schoolyards, quiet squares, cemeteries or communal gardens, each district strives to introduce nature among the cobblestones, plant trees between buildings, grow foliage that protects residents and regulates the climate. The tree, admired throughout time for its power, material and noble forms, is now—especially in the urban environment—recognized and respected for its regulating, protective, restorative properties against the multiple pollutants created by humans in less than two centuries.
My paternal grandmother's house—in the small village Transdanubie—was located 500 meters from a large state forest. In childhood I often went there to collect honey mushrooms or to walk, watch, listen to the trees in their natural environment, « chez eux »! As an adult, living in an urban environment—the world artificial—I notice the « humanisateur » of trees. Our hyperactive society, more than ever, needs the Beauty, calm, silence of trees.
The tree has inspired and continues to inspire our constructions, our Architecture: it is the « trunk, body, column » with its « branches, arms, arches of pointed vaults » of our cathedrals, but also the modern structures of contemporary architecture, organic architecture, wooden or metal frames.
I have learned, empirically, by observing and drawing them, that trees are as diverse as people. Each tree has its own character; there are no two identical ones on Earth. Beauty lies in difference.
Epilogue
Paris is one of the most greened capitals of Europe. Paris's arboreal heritage consists of: 100 000 aligned trees, representing a linear stretch of about 700 km, planted along 1 650 public roads of Paris; 40 000 trees in 490 municipal parks, gardens and squares; 30 000 trees in 6 outer and 14 inner cemeteries managed by Ville de Paris; 6 000 trees on the slopes of boulevard périphérique; 7 000 trees in municipal schools and preschool institutions, and 4 000 in sports facilities.
