During the Spanish Civil War almost 15,000 children were evacuated from the republican zone to France. This little‑known phenomenon is the subject of this book, studying the evacuation of these children as a result of mobilization and placing it in the context of the history of engagement regarding the war in Spain, including in societal movements.
During the Spanish Civil War almost 15,000 children from the republican zone were sent to France. Girls and boys roughly aged 5 to 15, they are usually registered by parents in order to place them in French foster families or in children’s homes created for them. Far from centralized, this humanitarian operation involves a great many different, often competing, participants.
The point of the book is to understand why this topic generated such interest, from the left Front populaire to Catholic intellectuals, from the Vatican to feminist activists. Helping children truly provides a path to action while sidestepping the dilemmas associated with this war, the policy of non‑intervention and European politics of the time: pacifism or anti‑fascism? safety or solidarity? liberty or subordination to the Pope? Confronted with these often‑becoming dichotomous questions, groups go around: helping children allows them to play on the duality of “cause refuge”, not entirely political but not completely neutral either — after all, France will only receive children from republican Spain…
Step by step, following these participants in their diversity and placing this mobilization in a transnational context and in the history of the social movements of the 1930s, Célia Keren here lifts the veil on a little‑known phenomenon of the war in Spain.

Spain, July 1936. A coup attempts to overthrow the Republic. The murder of democracy by the military, monarchists and fascists was pre‑planned. The intensity of popular reaction and resistance to the regime, less expected, turns the conflict into a bloody war lasting almost three years. The war is simultaneously political and social, civil and international: Mussolini and Hitler support General Franco’s troops, the USSR joins the side of the Republicans, while liberal democracies remain neutral. The world watches Spain and mobilizes in this war that claimed more than 500,000 lives and as many refugees.
Today numerous studies and archives, as well as testimonies, make it possible to write a new history of the Spanish war. This history reveals the long‑term work of undermining democracy by reactionary forces and the Spanish far‑right, long before 1936. It shows the deep mechanisms of the Francoist dictatorship and finally turns to the everyday experience of the participants in this key episode of twentieth‑century European history.
