On September 28, as part of the Nicosia International Festival 2026, the world premiere of the documentary “Echoes of Cyprus” will take place—a journey into the island’s past through music, people’s voices, and unique archival recordings.
The story begins in the summer of 1953, when Greek-American classical culture scholar James A. Notopoulos and researcher Dimitrios Petropoulos set out on a journey across Cyprus.
They brought a reel-to-reel tape recorder with them and began recording the island’s soundscape: traditional songs, oral poetry, τσιαττιστά (tsiattista)—improvised poetic duels—as well as instrumental music.
During their journey, they created more than eight hours of unique audio recordings that preserve the sounds of Cypriot culture from the mid-20th century.
Seventy-three years later, ethnomusicologist Dr. Nikoletta Demetriou sets out to follow in the footsteps of the 1953 researchers. Original field recordings, diary excerpts, and rare audiovisual materials come together in a single film, transforming into a journey through time—to a place where music becomes memory.
“Echoes of Cyprus” is more than just a documentary.
It is an opportunity to hear the voices of the past and feel how they continue to resonate today.
Following the screening, the audience will be treated to a live musical performance that will serve as a continuation of this journey between the past and the present.
The film runs for 28 minutes.
The film is shown with English subtitles.
