Françoise Gillard brings to the stage the shocking autobiographical work of Nobel Laureate Annie Ernaux, as part of the Nicosia International Festival.
The Nicosia International Festival welcomes for the first time in Cyprus the production of the legendary Comédie Française, with the shocking autobiographical work of Nobel Laureate Annie Ernaux by the great actress and director Françoise Gillard.
Few literary works have managed to transform a deep personal experience into a political and social event with the power that Annie Ernaux did with The event. The book that shocked France and inspired Audrey Diwan's Golden Lion-winning film metaphor, comes to the stage through austere but strong theatrical proposition by Françoise Gillard, Comédie Française's leading actor and partner.
In 1963, in a France where abortion is a criminal offence, a young student discovers that she is pregnant. Three months of agony, fear, humiliation, and despair follow, as she is forced to resort to illegal methods that come to threaten her life. At the same time, her desire to define her own life and body is faced with the Law, social prejudice and violence of a deeply patriarchal society.
With the characteristic accuracy and disarming honesty that they showed to one of the most important writers of our time, Annie Ernaux returns to that traumatic experience decades later breaking a silence that still weighs millions of women around the world.
Françoise Gillard, one of the most important figures of modern French theatre, having as an artistic partner the equally great actor, director and also partner of Comédie Française Denis Podalydès, approaches her monologue as an act of public testimony. With genuine emotion but without a trace of melodrama, he highlights the rare theatricality of Ernaux's writing and staged the confession of a woman on a case of all of us.
At a time when reproductive rights and self-determination of the female body are brought back to the heart of public debate internationally and are the subject of political confrontation, The event is gaining new, urgent news. The performance raises a question that remains open to this day: how free is a woman to decide for her own body?
"I want to sink back into that period of my life, find out what was there."
