When they asked her what brought her into the world of song, she answered “the rebetiko song from the gramophone and my father who was a musician,” but also “the Smyrnaic songs I heard from my cradle because my mother sang them.” This is Mariou’s world. The rebetiko song. Which she has served consistently for more than 60 years. A genuine rebetis and one of the most expressive representatives of the genre, Mariou has created her own small history over all these years. A story that she tells, in her own distinctive way, at every appearance, singing all those rebetiko songs we have loved over the years and more…
Thus, accompanied by the excellent performer Giannis Karalis, the composer and bouzouki soloist Dimitris Livanos, and the maestro and pianist Panagiotis Papageorgiou, they will appear at the Cosmiko Kentron Antonaki in Nicosia on Friday, October 2, 2026, to present songs – diamonds, rebetika, folk, Smyrnaic and traditional, in a heartfelt celebration. Because, as she says, “we want to entertain people as if we have invited them into our home.”
Mariou
Mariou, one of the most expressive representatives of rebetiko and folk song, first stepped onto the stage at age 13, singing and playing accordion alongside her father, who was also a musician. She debuted on stage singing Theodoros Derbeniotis and Kostas Virvo and had the luck to sing alongside Markos Vamvakaris. Since then, she has consistently and passionately served the song she loves, “traveling” it throughout Greece and the world through international festivals in which she participates. She has a significant discography with Smyrnaic songs, rebetika, folk songs, and songs by contemporary composers written for her voice. She participated in the albums “Thessaloniki in Rebetika” and “Thessaloniki in Rebetika No 2” (the first anthologies of rebetiko and folk songs themed on Thessaloniki), “Svesta Ola,” “Pame Tsarka,” “Rebetiko Song 1935 – 1959,” “O Arabas,” “Tribute to Vasilis Tsitsanis.” She also performed as the main vocalist in the presentation of the Café‑Aman song anthology titled “Tis Asiatidos Mousis Erastai,” as well as on the albums “Takimia,” “Mikres Angelies,” “The Grand Dame from Greece,” “Ta Laledakia,” “Sto Perivoli t’ ouranou,” “Bit Bazaar.” In 1999 she was selected by the coordinating organization of all European World Music Festivals (European Forum Of World Music Festivals) as the most important Touring Artist for 1999.
