The masterpiece work of Dionysios Solomos comes to life as a dynamic staged analogy at the favorite spot in the heart of Nicosia
Written in 1826, amid the Greek Revolution, the Woman of Zakynthos, one of the most important texts of modern Greek literature, is one of the most enigmatic and bold works of Dionysios Solomos. Through the first-person narrative of a hierarch, the poet outlines the form of a woman of the upper class of Zakynthos who embodies the malice, intolerance and moral decline, turning her hatred against the Mesologissa refugees and the rebellious, struggling Greece. Satira of the hypocrisy of the time? Political allegory for divisions within the nation? Or an existential search for the dark impulses of human nature? Two centuries later, Solomon's unfinished work continues to resist definitions, but never loses its timelyity.
The director and choreographer Antigone Gyra uses the Woman of Zakynthos as a starting point, including excerpts from the Free Beleaguered and the Pacified, as well as contemporary voices through personal memories of the creators, comments by journalist Constantine Pulis and the original music of rapper Anser. The two actors follow the rhythm of the salmonic speech with their entire body, sing, alternate roles and lead the audience on a route between poetry, memory and narrative, oral and physical. A prognosis that transcends reading is thus created and transformed into an effective event, which talks effortlessly with today, enlightening with humor and sorrow timeless matters of power, violence, injustice and human wickedness.
The performance was warmly welcomed by the public in the two circles that he held in Athens, launching the anniversary activities of the multi-shaft artistic organization "Motor" for his thirty-year-olds.
