Did you know that invasive alien plants actually have tremendous potential? If these species are threats to biodiversity, they have an amazing ability: dead, reduced to powder, they can absorb pollutants present in water. While most plants cannot grow in contaminated environments, some plant species have developed remarkable coping strategies and allow the original ecosystems to be recreated. This phenomenon is called ecological restoration.
Ecochemist Claude Grison, a member of the Academy of Sciences and a researcher at the CNRS, is the author of 210 publications and 46 CNRS patents that allow not only the use of plants to gradually restore terrestrial, aquatic and wetland ecosystems, but also to enhance the metals these plants have accumulated. Once harvested and processed, these metal saturated plants become eco-catalysts: plant powders capable of accelerating chemical reactions while reducing the environmental footprint of conventional chemistry.
This approach allows both the restoration of natural environments and the production of materials useful for health and well-being. Anticancer agents for cosmetics, applications are numerous! Claude Grison advocates for a regenerative economy capable of combining ecology, innovation and eco-responsible socio-economic activity. His work led to the creation of three companies supported by CNRS, which transform these discoveries into concrete solutions for restoration, ecological recycling of strategic metals and natural repellents inspired by the language of nature.
Claude Grison is Director of Research at the CNRS and Director of the Laboratory of Bio-inspired Chemistry and Ecological Innovations (ChimEco – CNRS/Université de Montpellier). She received the CNRS Innovation Medal in 2014 and the European Inventor Award in 2022 for her research on the use of clean plants as ecocatalysts. She is a member of the Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Pharmacy, the European Academy of Sciences and a professor at the Collège de France as part of the annual Avenir Commun Durable Chair in 2025-2026.
