Through more than 80 works and objects (paintings, engravings, posters, winemaking material, or even dishes), the exhibition highlights Balzac's reflection on viticulture and the place of wine in the art of living in French, from daily moments to great occasions.
In the 19th century, wine, like bread, was a pillar of food. A symbol of quality of life, it is also seen as a health issue. At the same time, the growth of the vineyard is accompanied by major technical and commercial innovations, making wine a vector of enrichment.
Balzac proposes a plural reading, in turn economic, sociological and artistic, without ever adopting a moralistic posture, through a wide variety of literary forms: brief journalistic essays like the Treaty of Modern Exciting; novel widely devoted to the subject (L Eugénie Grandet); evocations at the detour of a page (La Muse du département ; Lost illusions; The Rabouilleuse...; correspondence to friends, etc.
The exhibition takes place in the 4 exhibition rooms of the museum, each dedicated to a specific theme
