From the Renaissance to the Thirty Glories: The Hotel of Sens, a building through history

Current restorations of the courtyard paving and part of the stained‑glass windows of the hotel de Sens provide an opportunity to draw attention to the history and architecture of this unique place, very noticeable in the Parisian urban landscape.
Built at the end of the XVe century in Марэ, the hotel de Sens originally served as the residence of the archbishops of this city when they came to Paris. Today it is the headquarters of the Forney Library, surprising with its appearance of a small fortified castle in an urban environment that was heavily rebuilt in the XIXe and XXe centuries. The hotel itself has undergone numerous transformations in its history, at times serving as a stagecoach service, then as a profitable estate and a jam factory.
However, recent research has shown that Paris around the 1500s became a arena of intense architectural creativity, in which merchants, financiers and officials of royal institutions competed with each other. The hotel de Sens occupies a special place in this context: its strongly expressed stylistic choices truly reflect the personality of its patron, archbishop Тристана де Салазар, who sought to maintain his rank among the Parisian elite.

Thomas Morel
is a conservator of painting and graphic arts at the château de Fontainebleau. He dedicated his dissertation at the École des Chartes to the historical and archaeological study of the hotel de Sens, which he continues today, and devoted the rest of his research to the ways of living in large estates in the Art Nouveau era.
