Kazuto Suzuki (Professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy of the University of Tokyo and director of the Institute of Geoeconomics) and Valérie Niquet (research fellow and director of the Japan program at the Fondation pour la recherche stratégiques) will analyze Japan's positioning, facing the new dimensions of security, from economic security to cyber threats, including space and disinformation.
This conference will put into perspective cooperation with partners such as France and will question Japan's adaptive capacities in the face of these emerging challenges.
Speakers :
Kazuto Suzuki, Professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy of the University of Tokyo and director of the Institute of Geoeconomics. Born in 1970, he obtained in 2000 a doctorate in contemporary European studies at the University of Sussex. From 2008 to 2020, he taught at the Graduate School of Public Policy of the University of Hokkaido. Between 2013 and 2015, he was a member of the expert panel on sanctions against Iran for the United Nations Security Council. Since 2020, he has been a professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy of the University of Tokyo, and since 2022 he has headed the Institute of Geoeconomics. He is also a member of the expert council on Japan's growth strategy, a member of the Japanese Cabinet Office's space policy committee, as well as president of the Japan Society of Security Trade Studies. Valérie Niquet, research fellow at the Fondation pour la recherche stratégique (FRS) in Paris, where she conducts work on strategic affairs in Asia and leads the Japan program. From 2005 to 2010, she was head of the Asia Center of the Institut français des relations internationales (Ifri), after having directed the Asia program at the Institut de relations internationales et stratégiques (IRIS), where she founded the Observatory of Chinese and Asian Strategies. Her research focuses on China's foreign and security policy, Japan's strategic posture, relations across the Taiwan Strait, and the evolution of the security architecture in the Indo-Pacific. She has published numerous works on these topics, including several reference books such as "La puissance chinoise en 100 questions" (2017), "Le Japon en 100 questions" (2025), "Taïwan face à la Chine" (2021) and "L’Indo-Pacifique, nouveau centre du monde" (2025). She is a member of the Académie des sciences d’outre-mer, of the academic council of the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, and regularly participates in international conferences and dialogues. She frequently provides her expertise to academic and governmental forums.
