It’s in front of a painting that one wants to become a painter, not in front of a landscape, said Renoir. Generations of artists have set up their easels in museums to copy a model, pierce the secrets of a glaze, scrutinize a chiaroscuro, choosing masters with whom to rival in virtuosity and daring. Many have written their admiration or their hatred of their peers’ works. Free or scholarly, often puzzling, their viewpoints illuminate our gaze, offering us to discover their history of Western painting.
Cézanne wants to burn the Louvre, and then finally no. Picasso curses Bonnard’s pink skies. Ingres hates Géricault. Dalí imagines a rhinoceros in front of Vermeer. Soulages is ecstatic about Cimabue’s golds. Monet amazes Kandinsky. Delacroix details every little drop of Rubens and notices a coat on Véronèse. Gauguin compares Degas’s dancers to machines. And Dubuffet finds that, indeed, the works always answer the questions we ask them.
