On October 7, a unique concert will take place in Nicosia, where contemporary music meets ritual, theater, and the powerful sound of percussion instruments.
As part of the 17th Pharos International Festival of Contemporary Music, the Spanish ensemble BOOST Percussion Group will perform for the first time in Cyprus at The Shoe Factory, alongside renowned clarinetist George Georgiou.
BOOST Grupo de Percusión was founded in 2014 and brings together four musicians from the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain. Over the years, the group has gained recognition for its exploration of new musical ideas and unconventional sound solutions.
The ensemble’s repertoire spans a wide variety of genres—electronic, contemporary, classical, and ethnic music. It is precisely this freedom in working with different styles and sounds that makes BOOST’s performances particularly engaging for audiences.
For their debut in Cyprus, the musicians will present several premieres of works by renowned contemporary composers.
The highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of a new piece by Cypriot composer Andys Skordis titled “Zourrrrr…,” commissioned by the 17th Pharos International Festival of Contemporary Music.
The piece was inspired by the Ngunying ceremony, which the composer witnessed in Bangli on the island of Bali.
The musical work is structured as a unique dramatic performance. The percussionists embody temple musicians, while the bass clarinet becomes the voice of a witch who gradually appears, as if casting a spell and immersing the performers in a trance-like state.
This is a concert in which music transcends its usual boundaries and merges with ritual and theater, creating a mysterious atmosphere on the border between the earthly and the otherworldly.
