Cipher is a new quartet bringing together four of the most active voices on the Norwegian jazz scene. Their debut self‑titled album, recorded at Neby Studios in Oslo in June 2025, showcases a group built on deep musical camaraderie, collective energy, and a shared curiosity about the directions music can take. The name Cipher reflects the group’s core idea: a coded language, an internal musical code developed over the years spent playing together in various formations. The quartet relies on an intuitive understanding of phrasing, rhythmic placement, and each member’s improvisational instincts. This shared vocabulary shapes not only how the music comes alive on stage, but also the very writing of the compositions, originally conceived with the unique interaction between the band members in mind.
