It is few works as popular and immediately charismatic as the famous Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, which the composer assembled after his discovery in 1935 of authentic medieval poems. The new mixture of sacred and profane (prire and grivois propos de table), melodic seduction and epic grandeur, Latin and high-German, bursts into an irresistible profane cantata in which the spirituality and the very earthly concerns are related: luck, the return of spring, lust, the pleasures of alcohol and gambling...
With a conservative spirit, Orff turns away from the modernism of a Stravinski or Bartók, preferring to draw inspiration from the Renaissance and early Baroque art styles. Euphonic and apparently simple, even though it requires extreme meticulousness in performance, its art has several times seduced the cinema (none forgot the rides of Excalibur to the sound of the choir O Fortuna) and remains a federative tribute to the magical charm (carmen) of the music. A charm particularly perceptible in the version for small ensemble, which the audience can discover or rediscover through this participatory concert.
