Eli, Gabriel, Raphael, Steve and Said are five autistic teenagers. Their future already seemed predetermined. However, a bold project changes the pre‑set trajectories. Through demanding training these young people master culinary techniques, the art of plating dishes and floor service. Step by step they gain confidence and skills until they open a real restaurant in the very heart of Paris. The documentary follows their training and invites the viewer to change their perspective on autism.
A person with a disability is not a person who lacks something. It is a person who functions differently.

There was a sort of fatalism in their orientation, when they could only end up in a medical reception house. And not integrate into the world of work, even into an adapted world of work. We wondered how to give them every chance. And then the idea of a café arose …
Laurence Mellyul-Piou, director of IME Cour de Venise and creator of Notre café,
IME Cour de Venise, located in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, opened in 2008, taking in 22 young people with autism or pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), aged 12 to 18. IME offers semi‑internal residence with alternating internal residence of a sequential type for 5 places, to better prepare adolescents for the transition to adult life. Within the framework of a global project and based on structured education, IME offers a range of activities in IME premises or outside them: sports, cultural and functional (for example: theatre, circus, aikido, swimming pool, office skills, running/cooking, etc.).

The support for the admitted teenagers is comprehensive, depending on the identified needs of each of them. Its goal is to give them the opportunity to find their place in the social environment: family, institutions, work, leisure and cultural centers, etc., as well as the possibility to communicate with relatives and others.
Notre Café Marais is the result of 10 years of IME’s work and observation of a series of limitations in the support responses we can offer people with ASD. An inclusive associative cafeteria, open to all, Notre Café Marais is originally intended to provide a “normal” place where the skills acquired by young people with ASD in existing programs (including IME) can be generalized and assessed, while also serving as a site of social and professional integration for people with ASD.
