Work blue - introduction to the cyanotype technique
When: 12.09.2026 15:30

Invented in 1842 by the scientist John
Herschel, cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic techniques in history.
This process, by exposure to light, allows the production of works with an
intense and unique blue.
It is the
botanist Anna Atkins who, first, perceives its aesthetic potential by using it to immortalize her
collections of algae and ferns — thus producing what is considered the
first book illustrated with photographs. Long associated with technical
uses, notably the "blueprints" of architecture and
engineering, it has gradually conquered the artistic field. Cyanotype
remains today a technique little represented in artistic and
craft training circuits, it nevertheless
generates a growing
interest especially among contemporary photographers.
On the occasion of
the exhibition dedicated to François Kollar, photographer of the 1930s, author of La
France Travaille, the cyanotype workshop offers to create a link between
material, gesture and image. To personalize your work, feel free to bring flat objects you would like to see reproduced: lace, thread, needle, small stencil, etc.

The workshop facilitator
of the workshop
Mathilde Pinon
is an art historian who turned to cultural and artistic mediation and
in recent years, to the practice of cyanotype. Through
her workshops, she supports curious people, creatives and professionals
as well as cultural institutions that seek to explore
little‑known artistic and craft forms of expression.
