For more than 3 hours, Justin Hurwitz will conduct on stage a jazz band that will perform the film’s original soundtrack live during its screening (VOSTFR), perfectly synchronized with the images. Babylon immerses us in 1920s Los Angeles, at the height of silent cinema, when the Hollywood industry was living its wildest hours.
Amid decadence, excess and unbridled creativity, the film follows the intertwined fate of several characters played by Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Diego Calva, powerless witnesses to the revolution of sound cinema that will forever change their lives. Chazelle creates a monumental and electrifying fresco, a true love letter to the seventh art and its capacity for perpetual reinvention.
Justin Hurwitz’s score is the vibrant soul of this work. Blending frantic jazz, majestic orchestrations and syncopated rhythms inspired by the roaring Roaring Twenties, the successful composer (La La Land, First Man) delivers here one of his most ambitious and dizzying creations. His music matches Chazelle’s visual frenzy, moving from the unbridled euphoria of Hollywood parties to the intimate drama of characters devoured by their dreams.
