The Zadkine Museum, the first museum in France to dedicate an exhibition to him since his death, was well suited to pay tribute to the one who made her debut, in Paris, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Zadkine's sculpture class.
Alternating chronological sections and thematic topics, the exhibition places the work of Penalba in the artistic context of the 1950s-1960s. It evokes ties with other artists, such as Zadkine of course but also Brancusi, Picasso or Matisse. She is interested in the totemical works of Penalba that combine monumentality and verticality and emphasize the role of nature as the engine of creation. Penalba, marked in her childhood by Argentine landscapes, does not cease to refer to it to invent sculptures with biomorphic forms evoking desert plants.
The interest of Alicia Penalba in the decorative arts, her desire to decline her sculpture in different mediums – ceramics, tapestry – and in different sizes, from monumental to miniature and jewel, is the other red thread of an exhibition that reveals an independent and talented designer, having considerably renewed her art.
