If you want to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of rural life and learn about Cyprus’s agricultural traditions, head to the village of Statos in the Paphos district, where a unique agricultural festival takes place.
Festival guests will be able to witness ancient and now nearly extinct agricultural practices, such as plowing the land with an ox-drawn plow, threshing barley using a dukani—a traditional threshing device powered by oxen or mules— — as well as planting grapevines using a forked stick shaped like the letter “Y.”
The festival will feature an exhibition of traditional tools, agricultural equipment, and old-time trades. Visitors can tour local wineries and sample various wines.
At the numerous fair stalls, visitors can watch traditional local dishes and foods being prepared:
- palouzes—a delicate dessert made from grape juice and flour;
- soutzioukkos—almonds or walnuts strung on a thread and coated with a layer of palouzes;
- zivania — a strong alcoholic beverage produced by distilling grape pomace;
- trachanas — a thick soup made from grains and fermented milk;
- halloumi and anari cheeses;
- traditional bread;
- resi — a wheat dish with meat;
- tsamarella — dried meat;
- glyka tou koutaliou — traditional fruit jams and sweets served in small portions on a spoon;
- koulourouthkia with epsima—cookies soaked in grape syrup;
- kattimerka—traditional sweet pastries and baked goods.
A special entertainment program awaits the festival’s young guests: face painting, a trampoline, watercolor painting, and pottery workshops.
The festival will conclude with a grand musical program featuring traditional Cypriot songs and dances, which will serve as the highlight of the celebration.
