A true journey into the world of traditions awaits you, where you can sample a wide variety of jams and fruit sweets, buy your favorite treats, and even learn the secrets of how they’re made and ask for the recipe.
But what exactly is glyko tou koutaliou—“spoon sweet”? It’s a traditional Cypriot dessert made from fruits, berries, or nuts simmered in thick sugar syrup. In Cyprus, it’s customary to offer this treat to guests as a sign of hospitality. It’s also served for dessert in traditional taverns.
If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to try it during your afternoon break or order it with a cup of aromatic Cypriot coffee.
Guests can enjoy the fresh mountain air and picturesque village scenery, as well as free walking tours through the narrow streets of old Kakopetria and the chance to visit small local museums.
At the festival, you can stroll among the numerous stalls, examine the colorful jars of sweets, and try to guess exactly which fruits and berries are hidden inside. You’re sure to be surprised by the variety!
- green walnuts
- quince
- small white eggplants
- cherries
- figs stuffed with almonds
- strips of watermelon rind
- bitter orange zest
- thin curls of orange peel
and many other unusual treats.
In addition to sweets, the festival will feature traditional Cypriot products that you can sample and purchase—a great opportunity to discover the island’s authentic flavors.
The festive atmosphere will be enhanced by live traditional music, Cypriot dances, and special entertainment for children.
A true celebration of Cypriot hospitality, traditions, and, of course, sweets!
