Discovering Paris' neighbourhoods: the Maison-Blanche district

The White House neighborhood is named after an eponymous hamlet located at the current location of Maison-Blanche Metro Station. The northern part of the district was annexed to the city of Paris in 1860. It belonged to the commune of Gentilly. The Butte-aux-Cailles in the north was then covered with meadows, mills and quarries. These quarries served for the embankment of the valley, then to completely cover the Bièvre which flowed near it.
From rural hamlet to industrial district, Maison-Blanche has known several stories. Today, it is a quiet area full of hidden and atypical alleys, and many green spaces.
This guided tour is proposed by the History Committee of the City of Paris.
A dedicated digital journey, valuing the history and heritage of this 13th arrondissement district, was realized by the Department of History, Memory and Associative Museums (Directorate of Cultural Affairs) within the framework of the participatory budget of the City of Paris.
